Living Skills Program

Living Skills Day Program and Instructional classes are offered to help Shares, Inc. participants develop skills to enhance independence in daily life. Training activities are organized at the Shares, Inc. facility as well as in various locations in the community. Several participants connect to the community by providing volunteer services to organizations and businesses such as nursing homes, schools, animal shelters, senior services, hospitals and parks and recreational sites. Training is provided in a small group or one-on-one basis.

A Comprehensive Living Skills curriculum covers the six major Domains. Overall Domain goals and their sub categories are as follows:

Domains

1) Community

Goals:

  1. To become more informed and involved in local community events.
  2. To develop an increased awareness of events and affairs in the city, state, country, and world.
  3. To develop an increased awareness of local business, restaurants, stores, etc.
  4. To develop planning and decision-making skills.
  5. To increase community survival skills.
  6. To increase communication skills.
  7. To increase appropriate community behaviors and skills.

A. Socialization Skills (in the context of the community)

Objectives:

  1. To develop interpersonal relationships.
  2. To learn appropriate public/private behaviors.
  3. To develop and maintain personal friendships.
  4. To learn appropriate social manners and courtesies.
  5. To use social skills learned in a community setting.

B. Communication Skills (in the context of the community)

Objectives:

  1. Learn to communicate wants and needs verbally or with gestures or symbols.
  2. Learn to follow directions.
  3. Improve listening skills.
  4. Learn conversational skills.
  5. Initiate communication.

2) Home/Life

Goals:

  1. To increase independence in daily living tasks.
  2. Develop self-esteem and confidence.
  3. To learn basic cooking, grooming, housekeeping, money, laundry and self-care skills.

A. Cooking Skills

Objectives:

  1. Four Food Groups and Menu Planning
  2. Learn proper food storage
  3. Identify various cooking utensils and appliances
  4. Define the meaning of various cooking terms
  5. Identify and demonstrate proper measurements
  6. Improve ability to read recipes

B. Laundry and Clothing Care Skills

Objectives:

  1. Sort laundry by colors
  2. Demonstrating use of Washer
  3. Demonstrating use of Dryer
  4. Demonstrate ability to fold clothes properly
  5. Demonstrate ability of mending/sewing
  6. Knowledge of proper clothing to wear for each Season

C. Housekeeping Skills

Objectives:

  1. Improve housekeeping skills

D. Personal Information and Safety Skills

Objectives:

  1. Improve knowledge of personal information
  2. Improve telephone usage
  3. Improve safety skills
  4. Identify basic survival signs found in the community

3) Recreation/Hobbies

Goals:

  1. To increase and maintain physical fitness.
  2. To explore and develop individual interests and hobbies.
  3. To develop fine and gross motor skills.
  4. To develop and practice planning and decision making skills.
  5. To become more informed and involved in community recreation and leisure opportunities.

4) Pre-Vocational Skills

Goals:

  1. To increase awareness of work expectations, work behaviors, and work responsibilities.
  2. To increase awareness of various jobs, careers, and professions.
  3. To increase self-esteem through work performance and receipt of pay checks.

5) Functional Academics

Goals:

  1. To learn skills in academics that adapt to everyday life.
  2. To learn to become independent through academics.
  3. To learn personal information.
  4. To increase awareness of surroundings/environment.
  5. To prepare for vocational programming.

A. Reading Skills

Objectives:

  1. Establish letter-sound relationships
  2. Learning through association
  3. Familiar vocabulary introduced
  4. Use of repetition to strengthen the visual image
  5. Reading for meaning
  6. Learning reading and writing together
  7. Recognize beginning sounds of words
  8. Distinguishing the ending sound
  9. Participants capable will be involved in a reading for meaning class, where they share reading stories out loud and discuss with others in the class the context of the paragraphs.

B. Math and Money Skills

Objectives:

  1. Match coins and bills.
  2. Identify and state the value of coins and bills.
  3. Distinguish between higher vs. lower values.
  4. Improve ability to add coins and bills.
  5. Improve banking and budgeting skills.
  6. Improve counting skills.
  7. Improve math skills.
  8. Improve use of calculator.

C. Time Telling Skills

Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate Time Telling skills
  2. Improve Calendar use
  3. Know the seasons of the year
  4. Learn Digital Clock use

6) Self-Management

Goals:

  1. Improve decision-making
  2. Building self-esteem and self confidence
  3. Improving interpersonal relationships
  4. Appropriate choice making
  5. Self-determination skills
  6. Improving and enhancing community resources
  7. Enhance understanding of rights and responsibilities

A. First-Aid/Health/Infection Control

Objectives:

  1. Care for minor injuries
  2. Read a thermometer
  3. Read and understand use of prescriptions
  4. Disease Prevention

B. Socialization Skills (in the context of the facility)

Objectives:

  1. To develop interpersonal relationships.
  2. To learn appropriate public/private behaviors.
